What is Neurofeedback (NFB)?

In simple terms, neurofeedback is a type of therapy that helps people learn to control and improve their own brain activity. It does this by using special sensors on the head to measure the electrical activity in the brain.  This process is non-invasive and done at the scalp level.  EEG technology allows trained clinicians to see in real-time the activity of an individual's brainwaves and whether certain brain regions are too active or not active enough, causing dysregulation.  By training brainwaves for optimal functioning, clients can see significant reductions in anxiety, depression, trauma, OCD, PTSD, ADHD, sleep disorders and many more mental health conditions.

NFB is biofeedback that measures the electrical activity of the brain from the scalp level. It is a non-invasive treatment that helps train the brain to operate more efficiently. It's like helping you connect the puzzle pieces that just don't seem to fit together.

Step #1

Individuals will meet with the therapist to provide a history and discuss symptoms and goals.  This session takes approximately two hours.

Step #2

The therapist will perform the qEEG (brain map).  This session takes about one hour.

Step #3

The therapist and client will meet via Zoom or in person to review the brain map and discuss the protocol for training.

Step #4

With the protocol set, the client begins neurofeedback training

Step #5

Training the brain takes time, and the recommended number of sessions needed is between 30 – 40, depending on the conditions being addressed and the client's goals. Ideally, training would occur twice per week.

Why Choose Neurofeedback?

Evidence-backed and safe, neurofeedback addresses numerous conditions. It's known to uplift cognitive abilities, lessen anxiety and depression, promote restful sleep, alleviate pain, boost mood, mitigate stress, heighten self-awareness, and refine emotional stability.

Kathy McCrorie

Kathy brought neurofeedback therapy to Capstone Counseling in 2023. She studied in Boston with some of the world leaders in neurofeedback therapy.  She has continued to hone her knowledge of brain mapping, protocol development, and NFB training over the past few years.  She has worked with clients dealing with anxiety, depression, trauma, ADHD, misophonia, OCD, and panic disorders.  She works with all ages for NFB.

Kathy also sees individuals for talk therapy for most mental health conditions using an integrative approach with a focus on the psychodynamic model.  She enjoys working with couples and is trained in the Gottman Method to help partners find or rekindle intimacy.

  • What is Neurofeedback (NFB)?

    • NFB is a non-pharmaceutical, passive and non-invasive technique
    • NFB improves the baseline of the brain.  With enough training, the improvements can be maintained over time.
    • NFB is a self-regulated technique in which the client learns to alter their brain activity
    • NFB is based on learning

  • How does NFB work?

    • Learn to improve functioning in specific brain areas
    • This improvement can positively impact emotional state, cognitive functions, behavior and sleep
    • NFB is a learning process and most people can do it
    • Progression is individual
    • Number of sessions to maintain the effect over time varies from 20 to 40 or more. Depends on the severity of the condition and on the individual
    • Mild to moderate symptoms with localized EEG abnormalities might improve faster and more successfully than severe and complex conditions
  • Will neurofeedback work for me?

Initial assessment will help determine the following:

    • Client’s goals
    • Symptoms
    • Medical and Psychological Conditions
    • Commitment and Readiness

    Client’s contribution:

    • Commitment to therapy
    • Healthy nutrition
    • Exercise
  • How long will the effect of neurofeedback last?

At least 20 sessions are needed for the effect to be maintained

  • Is neurofeedback dangerous?

    • NFB is a passive non-invasive technique
    • Most side effects are short-term, mild and transient
    • When addressed, side effects can be resolved

Side effects can be contributed to:

    • NFB training (e.g. headache from the game, brain exercise)
    • Protocol (adjust the protocol, use a different protocol)
  • How much does neurofeedback sessions cost?

Unfortunately, neurofeedback is not covered by insurance in the state of Georgia.

The fee for the consultations, assessments, and conducting and evaluating the brain map is $800.  Each neurofeedback training session is $100.
