This workshop will address theoretical perspectives on treating sexual behaviors in clients who experience significant distress.
Clients present quite often with sexual behaviors that are problematic for them, their families, or society. The concept of sexual addiction gained notoriety over the last 40 years. The recent failed attempts to get sexual addiction into the DSM brought many problems to light. Researchers have worked over the last 10 years to address the issues related to problematic sexual behaviors. The recent acceptance of compulsive sexual behavior disorder into the ICD makes this topic even more relevant.

Ethics and Safety: Protecting Your Practice, Clients, and Yourself -

Safety in the workplace is essential in our field. The pandemic has added a new dimension to this conversation. How do we protect ourselves and our clients physically and emotionally? Creating a safe, therapeutic environment is essential for quality therapy. In recent years, therapists have been in dangerous situations with in-home therapy. Sadly, a few therapists in other states have been killed while at work in their offices. In addition, there are issues with social media and the Internet. Therapists have been the target of phone and email scams. An alarming number fall prey each year. Most companies today do active shooter training. It’s essential to consider these issues before there is a tragedy. This training will be a unique approach to ethics with lots of lively discussion around complex issues.
Many challenges confront therapists today that force us to stretch our thinking. Is it possible to be an effective therapist, run a business, navigate HIPAA, Medicaid, and the insurance industry? And then add the challenges of dealing with more personality disorders, sexual issues, and the challenges of working with more diverse families. We will explore ethical issues around running a private practice or counseling center.
